Paul Croutch Memorial, 09/15/08, Digital C-Print
A make-shift memorial is made for Paul Croutch, from the bench he was murdered on.
In 2005, three reservists from Moss Park Armoury brutally beat Paul Croutch to death, after their own night of drinking. Paul Croutch, who was sleeping at the time of his murder, would often sleep on this bench to avoid the conditions of shelters, where disease, assault and theft are common. Two of the reservists pleaded guilty to manslaughter and assault (on a woman who attempted to stop the attacks on Paul) and the third reservist was charged with being an accessory to the crime.
Paul Croutch’s death set off sparks in the anti-poverty movement, with demands that the Armoury be converted into a shelter for the homeless.
